Our Safety Measures

Your safety is our priority.

Fishing, floating and hunting all involve inherent levels of risk. At S², your safety is at the forefront of every step in your journey with us, even well before your trip begins. Our Audited Safety Management System and Standard Operating Procedures combine industry standards, best practise and extensive learnings from our diverse guiding careers. We are committed to ongoing refinement of our procedures and have over 25 years of professional experience guiding outdoor pursuits in some of the world’s most remote and exotic environments.

Hazards & Risks

Clients will be briefed on hazards and risks at the start of each day. Before the activity begins, clients will go through a safety checklist and disclosure form with the guide to ensure they understand all the risks, hazards and safety protocols prior to a trip commencing. Hunting clients must also pass a firearms competency assessment with the guide before setting out on a hunt. All of our trips are customised to meet the abilities and aspirations of the client whilst ensuring the highest level of safety at all times.

Trained Professionals

Shawna is S²’s safety and medical officer. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, Registered Nurse, NZ LandSAR instructor and advanced outdoor first aid trainer.

Scotty and Shawna have extensive training and experience in river rescue and wilderness first aid. They have over 15000kms of commercial rowing experience on rivers rated up to class 4.

S²’s experiences are on the lower end of the risk profile in terms of New Zealand’s outdoor activities. Our float trips are carried out on slow flowing sections of low gradient river or on still water lakes, always staying in close proximity to the shore. Our land-based guiding is carried out in non-alpine environments. For people looking for whitewater float trips (class 2+ rapids) or other high risk adventures, we can connect you to some of NZ’s best adventure activity operators.
