When we first stepped foot into Fishjet NZ’s custom built V8 jet boat to go fly fishing in the swift, gin clear waters of the Upper Waiau River, we were skeptical to say the least. How wrong we were! It’s quite incredible to see just how close a skilled jet boat guide can get to a feeding trout to allow a client to make a cast. This is a truly unique kiwi fishing experience that every angler should get to experience during their Fiordland fishing trip.
Fish Jet
There’s no better way to fish this particular stretch of river, which holds some of the highest trout densities per kilometre in New Zealand. Rainbow trout and brown trout are both abundant. With only 10% of the bank accessible by foot, this river is best suited to fishing from watercraft. The Fishjet NZ experience is a great option for anglers of all abilities, especially families with young kids looking to give trout fishing a try. It’s well suited to both spin fishing and fly fishing. Beginner and novice anglers will find this to be the most reliable option in our region to catch fish. Experienced anglers can expect to have high success rates, especially during one of the Upper Waiau’s famed Coloburiscus (Colly) Mayfly dun hatches or spinner falls.
